A leader of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society announced in Los Angeles that the environmental vigilante group hopes to provoke “an international incident†next June by destroying the huge drift nets used by Japanese, South Korean and Taiwanese fishing fleets in the North Pacific. Spokesman Benjamin White said drift nets, intended to ensnare salmon, sea trout and squid, also trap and kill 5,500 porpoises, 50,000 fur seals and 1 million sea birds annually. The same group claims responsibility for scuttling or sinking five whaling ships since 1980. Volunteers will man the group’s 200-foot vessel, the Sea Shepherd, during the planned action against the drift net fleets, White said.
