WINTER SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : San Francisco State Rallies to Defeat CSUN, 68-55
San Francisco State outscored Cal State Northridge, 30-2, during an 11-minute run in the second half and came from behind to defeat the Matadors, 68-55, in the nonconference game Saturday night at San Francisco.
With 14 1/2 minutes left in the game, the Matadors led, 42-27, but Johnnie Shelton hit three consecutive three pointers to ignite a 16-0 run and give San Francisco the lead for good. With four minutes left, San Francisco had built its lead to 57-44.
CSUN (1-7) was led by Roy Horwath, who scored a season-high 20 points. Jimmy Daniels added 10 for the Matadors. Shelton was the game’s high scorer with 22.
CSUN committed 26 turnovers, while San Francisco had 12.
Redlands 95, The Master’s 90--Matt Michaelson scored 23 points and host Redlands held off a late rally in the nonconference game.
Redlands, which had four players in doubles figures, led by as many as nine points in the second half. The Master’s (0-7) came as close as two points in the second half.
The Master’s was led by Pete Coeler, who scored a season-high 41 points. Teammate Rocky Snipes added 14. Phil Hahn, who had averaged 16 points per game for The Master’s, was held to three.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Silver Valley JV 59, Highland Hall 36--Highland Hall trailed by only a point at the end of the first quarter but had three starters foul out and was blown out in the championship game in the Baker Valley tournament.
Highland Hall (1-3) was led by Wes Parrish, who scored 10 points. Keith Fisher of Silver Valley scored all 16 of his points in the second half.
Viewpoint 63, Newbridge 26--Ali Banki, a 6-4 forward, had 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead Viewpoint to the nonleague win at Chatsworth Park.
Viewpoint (2-2) dominated the boards and made several baskets off fast breaks. Andy Telanoff of Viewpoint had 19 points.
Oak Park 66, Faith Baptist 49--Brian Friefeld scored 29 points to lead Oak Park to the nonleague win at Faith Baptist.
Oak Park (3-1) led, 18-8, at the end of the first quarter and increased its advantage to 38-15 at halftime. Shaik Nabi added 16 points for Oak Park.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Alemany 66, Hart 30--Alemany used a pressing defense to take an 18-point lead in the first quarter and coasted to the consolation championship in the Bishop Diego tournament.
Hart managed only eight shots in the first half and was 0 for 12 in the fourth quarter. Jenny Beubis, who made 6 of 11 shots, led Alemany (8-1) with 14 points. Teammate Carol Schoenmann added 11.
BOYS SOCCER
Westlake 8, St. Bonaventure 0--Wally Anderoski and Eric Wynalda each scored three goals as Westlake dominated the nonleague game at St. Bonaventure.
Anderoski and Wynalda each scored twice in the first half and Westlake (4-0) led at the intermission, 5-0. Anderoski also had two assists, while Wynalda had one. St. Bonaventure is 0-2.
GIRLS SOCCER
Simi Valley 1, Alemany 0--Brenda Brian scored an unassisted goal with 10 minutes left in the game to give Simi Valley the win in the championship semifinal in its own tournament. Simi Valley (5-0) has allowed only one goal this season.
Royal 1, Thousand Oaks 0--Royal improved its record to 6-0 by winning the championship semifinal in the Simi Valley tournament. The championship game will be played Saturday.
