2 U.S. World Champions Upset in 8-3 Loss to Cuba
World champions Ken Gould and Darin Allen of the United States were upset, and Cuba scored an 8-3 victory in the 1986 USA-Cuba amateur boxing dual meet at Lake Charles, La.
Gould, of Rockford, Ill., lost a split decision to Juan Lemus in the 147-pound class. In the 165-pound class, Allen, of Columbus, Ohio, was stopped by Angel Espinosa in the third round.
Cuba won its 12th straight title since the two countries began the dual meets on Nov. 12, 1977.
“The USA’s performance was much better than the score shows,†said Coach Pat Nappi of Syracuse, N.Y. “We lost a couple of close decisions. If they had gone the other way, the outcome would have been entirely different.â€
