Orange County Community College Basketball : Waikle Comes Off the Bench to Lead Saddleback Past Cypress
John Waikle scored 13 points off the bench and Tom Manily added 10 to lead Saddleback College to a 61-46 victory over Cypress in the semifinals of the Santa Barbara Tournament Friday night.
Waikle replaced Vince Smalls, who picked up three fouls midway in the first half.
The Gauchos (5-3) also got 10 points from guard Mike Minier.
Andy Olivarez scored 15 for Cypress (5-6).
In the Golden West Tournament:
Citrus 103, Golden West 84--The Owls (5-3) jumped out in front, 13-0, led at the half, 36-17, and left the Rustlers (2-4) behind. Kevin Kurz scored 23 points for Citrus and Jim Stewart 17 for Golden West.
Citrus plays Cerritos in the championship tonight at 8 and Golden West plays Riverside at 6 for third place.
In the San Jose Tournament:
Orange Coast 96, Contra Costa 67--The Pirates, which had their 10-game winning streak snapped Thursday night by Columbia, were led by forward Mike Kelly’s 27 points.
Guard Chuck McGavran scored 22 and forward Rob Mase 21 for for OCC (10-1) which plays De Anza in the consolation final today at 4.
In nonconference:
Fullerton 92, Chaffey 84--Fullerton freshman guard Troy Joseph led the team in scoring with 23 points and was second in team rebounds with nine. Second-highest scorer for the Hornets was sophomore guard Jim Mansfield with 19 points, including 7-for-7 in free throws.
In women’s nonconference play:
Orange Coast 49, Fullerton 48--With OCC behind, 48-46, Lisa Schumaker scored a basket with 20 seconds left, was fouled and made the free throw to lift the Pirates in Costa Mesa.
Schumaker led Orange Coast (7-5) with 25 points and point guard Nacy Lux added 8.
Stacy Rooney scored 18 for Fullerton (5-6).
Golden West 52, L.A. Valley 51--Jennine Battaglia made a 25-foot shoot at the buzzer for the Rustlers (9-0) at L.A. Valley. Battaglia finished with 15 points and April Marion scored 16. L.A. Valley is 8-2 with both losses coming to Golden West.
Cypress 65, South Mountain 43--Janene Allen, scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half for the Chargers.
