Aquino Won’t Allow Marcos Return to See Ailing Mother
MANILA — President Corazon Aquino today refused to allow ousted dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos to return to the Philippines to see his ailing 98-year-old mother, Dona Josefa.
Presidential spokesman Teodoro Benigno said Aquino was willing to send Dona Josefa to the Marcos exile home in Hawaii “if the need arises.â€
Reports have circulated in Manila that Dona Josefa’s condition worsened recently. She has been cared for at the Philippine Heart Center for Asia since a civilian-backed military coup ousted her son and installed Aquino as president last February.
Benigno said Aquino opposed Marcos’ return and added: “We can bring the grand lady to Honolulu.â€
