Pyers, Ford Lead USC Women to 74-69 Win Over Utah in Final

The USC women’s basketball team defeated Utah, 74-69, Saturday night in the championship game of the Lady Ute-Rainbo tournament at Salt Lake City.
Paula Pyers scored 17 points, and Hollie Ford had 16 to lead the sixth-ranked Trojans (4-1).
Utah (3-2) pulled to within one point, 70-69, with 17 seconds left, but two free throws by Karon Howell gave the Trojans a three-point lead with 10 seconds left. Two free throws by Ford with one second left concluded the scoring.
Sophomore Cherie Nelson, who had 21 points in USC’s 53-38 victory over Oklahoma State Friday night, 6-6 center Monica Lamb, who had 10 points and 8 rebounds Saturday night, and Pyers represented USC on the all-tournament team.
Donna Holzwarth scored 23 points to lead Utah.
USC’s next game is Tuesday night against San Diego State at the Sports Arena.
