Reagan and the Unfolding Iran-Contra Story
You managed to bury on Page 8 of your Dec. 2 issue a highly significant story relating to the Iran arms deal. I refer to the dateline-Moscow item, “Izvestia Accuses Tehran of Aiding U.S. in Afghan War.â€
Izvestia is quoted as complaining that at least part of the arms we sent to Iran were rerouted to the Muslim insurgents fighting the Kabul regime. So then, our arms deal with Iran not only helped the Afghan Freedom Fighters, but it also laid the groundwork for further cooperation between the United States and Iran against Moscow’s aspirations in the Middle East.
That would make the arms deal in the best interests not only of this country but also of the entire free world. It is tragic that the liberal press and congressmen are trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by turning the arms deal into a weapon against the Reagan Administration.
