Stepped-up raids by the Immigration and Naturalization Service have infuriated businessmen in the area. Undocumented residents make up a large segment of their clientele and one shop owner described downtown as “a ghost town†in the wake of the sweeps.
Last week, about 300 people took to the streets to protest the raids, marching through the Civic Center and calling for the INS to back off until a recently approved federal immigration law can take effect.
