Lori Garbacz and Craig Stadler made nine birdies en route to a 63 Friday, pulling within two strokes of Juli Inkster and Tom Purtzer midway through the $650,000 J.C. Penny Mixed golf tournament at Largo, Fla.
Inkster and Purtzer, who tied the tournament record with an opening-round 61, added a 69 for a two-round total of 14-under-par 130.
“When someone shoots 11 under, you have to go get them,” said Garbacz, who capped the round of 63 with a 15-foot birdie at No. 18. “This is the steadiest we’ve played--we haven’t made any bogeys.”
Val Skinner and Mike Hulbert were second at 131, one shot ahead of Garbacz and Stadler, after a 66. Debbie Massey and Mark McCumber were at 133 after a 65.
A field of 50 teams is competing for a top prize of $130,000.
West German Bernhard Langer birdied the 18th hole to gain a share of the second-round lead with Britain’s Howard Clark at the halfway point in the Million Dollar Challenge at the Sun City resort in Bophuthatsuawa, a black tribal homeland northeast of Johannesburg.
Langer, who had a four-under-par 68, and Clark, who shot a 69, were at 138 in the battle for the $300,000 first prize.
Lanny Wadkins, co-leader with Clark after the first round, shot a 72 for a total of 141.
Wadkins is the only American in the nine-man field this year following pullouts by other U.S. stars because of anti-apartheid pressure against South Africa.
