Women’s Basketball Roundup : Lamb’s 24 Help USC Beat Oklahoma State
Monica Lamb had 24 points and 15 rebounds to lead the USC women’s basketball team to a 92-83 victory over Oklahoma State Friday night in the first round of the Lady Ute Rainbo Tournament at Salt Lake City.
Lamb, a transfer from Houston, had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the first half as the Trojans turned an early 8-6 deficit into a 53-38 halftime lead. Oklahoma State (2-2) could not get closer than six points in the second half.
Sophomore Cherie Nelson added 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Trojans (3-1), while Paula Pyers, playing in place of injured point guard Rhonda Windham, had 17 points and 5 assists.
Clinette Jordan led Oklahoma State with 30 points.
UCLA’s Dora Dome scored 14 points, and Jaime Brown had 10 to lead the Bruins to a 79-55 win over Cal State Fullerton at the Wooden Center.
UCLA (3-0) took a 10-2 lead and stretched it to 40-27 at halftime.
CS Fullerton (1-3) was led by Kathi Hall with 15 points and 7 rebounds).
Cal State Long Beach (3-1) broke open a tight game in the second half as Penny Toler scored 17 of her game-high 26 points to lead the 49ers to an 82-69 win over Oregon at Eugene, Ore.
CS Long Beach’s Cindy Brown scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half, and freshman Shannon Smith grabbed 12 rebounds in the game.
Oregon center Gabi Neumann scored 24 points for the Ducks (1-2).
Earnesta Grace scored 22 points to lead Pepperdine to a 68-61 win over Idaho in the first round of the San Jose State tournament at San Jose.
Grace made 10 of 12 shots and also had 8 rebounds and 6 steals. Idaho led, 10-4, early in the first half, but the Waves (2-2) rallied to take the lead and never trailed thereafter.
Idaho is 1-3.
