College Basketball Roundup : Memphis State Streak Ended by UNLV, 80-77

Jarvis Basnight scored the final six points, and Gerald Paddio scored 26 points, seven on three-point shots, as No. 2-ranked Nevada Las Vegas defeated Memphis State, 80-77, in college basketball Friday night at Memphis, Tenn.

It was the first home loss for Memphis State following 39 consecutive victories and its third loss in a row. The Tigers fell to 2-3, while the Rebels are 5-0.

Memphis State was led by Vincent Askew, who had 23 points, and Dwight Boyd, who had 17.

Armon Gilliam, who injured his knee with 8 1/2 minutes to go, scored 21 points for UNLV and Mark Wade had 10.

UNLV attempted 15 three-point shots and connected on 8.

Memphis State, trailing 80-77 with five seconds remaining in the game, missed an opportunity to tie the game when John Wilfong’s shot from three-point range rimmed the basket and popped out at the final buzzer.

Basnight broke a 74-74 tie with just over two minutes remaining when he hit a short jumper. But Askew tied the score at 76-76 on a jumper from the side.

Then, Basnight hit again from the lane with one minute left to give UNLV the lead for good, 78-76.

Following a free throw by Memphis State’s Sylvester Gray, who scored 12 points, Basnight hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds remaining for the final points of the game.

UNLV trailed at halftime, 42-33, but outscored the Tigers, 12-2, after intermission to close the margin to 46-45.

Syracuse 73, Oklahoma State 62--Greg Monroe, making his first start of the season, scored 20 points for the Orangemen (3-0) in the first round of the Carrier tournament at Syracuse, N.Y. The Cowboys (1-2) trailed only 50-47 with 7:52 left but were outscored 14-4 to fall behind, 64-51, with 2:20 left.

For Oklahoma State, Robert Smith and Nolan Richardson, son of the Arkansas coach of the same name, each had 14 points.

In tonight’s final, Syracuse will meet Northeastern (4-1), which overcame a 10-point first half deficit to score a 76-70 win over Jacksonville. Reggie Lewis led Northeastern with 21 points. Tony Mundine had 19 points for Jacksonville (1-2).

Westmont 78, Western Michigan 52--Jeff Daniels scored 16 points and Dan Camp and Curt Anders added 14 apiece for the Warriors who outscored the Broncos, 21-4, after taking a 35-32 halftime lead at Kalamazoo, Mich.

Western Michigan (0-3) made only 6 of 41 shots in the second half and shot 28% for the game. Westmont (2-1) shot 53%.

Navy 92, Yale 63--David Robinson had 31 points and five blocked shots and Doug Wojcik had 12 assists for the Midshipmen (3-1) who extended their home winning streak to 18 games. The Elis (2-1) shot only 34% and trailed at halftime, 48-23. Navy shot 58%.

Utah State 100, Grambling 80--Danny Conway scored 18 points for the Aggies (2-3) who steadily pulled away after taking a 51-42 lead at halftime. Grambling (1-3) was led by Charles Price with 26 points, followed by Leon Bullock with 20.

Stanford 76, Columbia 66--The Cardinal was never threatened after taking a 40-24 halftime lead in the Apple Invitational at Stanford. Todd Lichti had 14 points for Stanford (2-2). For Columbia (1-2), Matt Shannon scored 22 points, including four three-pointers.

Cardinal forward Greg Butler was ejected from the game for punching Guido Casparis of Columbia early in the second half.

Arizona State 97, Hawaii 72--Steve Beck scored 24 points and Arthur Thomas added 20 for the Sun Devils who were never threatened after taking a 22-2 lead in the Kactus Klassic at Tempe, Ariz. Arizona State, playing its season opener, led by as many as 32 points over the Rainbows (1-2).

In tonight’s final, the Sun Devils will meet Houston which beat Mississippi Valley State, 78-70. Greg Anderson led the Cougars (3-0). Mississippi Valley (2-2) was led by George Ivory with 21 points.

Oregon State 91, UC Santa Barbara 85--Jose Ortiz had 28 points for the Beavers who held on after taking a 72-55 lead at Corvallis, Ore. Brian Johnson had 18 points for the Gauchos (1-2).
