The president of a drilling firm has been sentenced to 45 days in Los Angeles County Jail after pleading no contest to an involuntary manslaughter charge stemming from the death of an employee in an elevator shaft hole at a downtown Los Angeles construction site last year. Michael Maggio, 29, of Maggio Drilling Inc. of West Covina, was also placed on five years’ probation and ordered to pay $12,000 restitution to the young son of employee Kevin Bauman, 23. Bauman stopped breathing after being lowered into a 33-foot shaft. The case was the first felony filed by the district attorney’s Occupational Safety and Health Section established in 1985.
