Compton : Teachers Walk Out Again

About 1,200 Compton teachers walked out of their classrooms Wednesday, striking for the third time in recent weeks after union officials declared that their negotiations for higher pay had reached a stalemate. Wiley Jones, executive director of the Compton Education Assn., said teachers would decide “a day at a time” how long to stay away from their jobs.
Negotiators for the Compton Unified School District have offered the teachers--the lowest paid in Los Angeles County--a 6% raise this year and smaller percentages over the next two years. However, union officials say, that won’t be enough to bring teachers up to the county average, which was recommended by an independent fact-finder.
