Lakewood : Special Election Scheduled

A special election to fill the City Council seat of Paul Zeltner, who was elected to the Assembly in November, has been set for March 3.
Zeltner, whose term expires in April, 1988, took office as 54th District Assemblyman this week, which leaves a four-person council until the election.
Although state law allows cities to appoint council members, a municipal code adopted in the mid-1970s requires the city to hold an election, City Clerk Jack Huntsinger said.
The election will cost the city at least $30,000 if it consolidates with state elections, which may be held March 3, and $35,000 if the city administers its own election, according to city estimates.
Possible candidates, Councilwoman Jacqueline Rynerson said, are Wayne Piercy, a former councilman and principal of Polytechnic High School, and Community Safety Commissioner Bill Kennedy, a retired sheriff’s captain.
Nomination forms will be issued and accepted at the city clerk’s office from today until Dec. 26.
