Michaela Gerg of West Germany put together two flawless runs to win the giant slalom at Park City, Utah, in the season’s first women’s World Cup event.

Gerg, who was second behind Switzerland’s Michela Figini after the first run, completed the two runs down the Payday course in 2:31.26. Yugoslavia’s Mateja Svet was second in 2:31.33, and Switzerland’s Vreni Schneider, the defending World Cup Giant slalom champion, was third in 2:31.59. Figini finished fourth.

Tamara McKinney, the 1983 overall World Cup champion, finished seventh, the best showing by an American. Debbie Armstrong, Kristi Terzian, Beth Madsen and Eva Twardokens of the United States finished 12th, 20th, 23rd and 25th, respectively.

It was the first time in the 21-year history of the World Cup that the series has opened in North America.
