Relieving Crowded Schools : How Proposals to Add Space and Redistribute Enrollment Would Affect the Valley
The Los Angeles Board of Education Monday is expected to choose one or more of six proposals to accommodate its burgeoning student population.
The chart below shows how the 96 elementary and junior high schools in the San Fernando Valley would be affected by each alternative, which the board has labeled Plans A, B and C and Concepts I, II and III. Valley high schools are not involved.
The most controversial part of all proposals is converting some schools to a year-round calendar.
Under Concept I, no schools would be changed to a year-round calendar. Under Plan B, 35 Valley schools would be changed to a 12-month schedule.
Year-round schools increase their capacity by dividing students into several groups with at least one of those groups on vacation at any given time. By converting more schools to a year-round schedule, the district hopes to find classroom space for the 635,000 students expected to be enrolled by 1990, contrasted with 579,000 now.
In addition to the year-round option, each of the six plans has other alternatives, including adding portable classrooms and changing ethnic ratios.
