Lewis H. Nosanow, who has been in charge of research grants at the National Science Foundation in Washington for the past 10 years, has been appointed to the newly created position of vice chancellor for research and dean of graduate studies at UC Irvine, officials announced.

Nosanow, who holds a doctorate in chemical physics from the University of Chicago, is expected to join the UCI staff early in 1987. His appointment to the new vice chancellor post was approved by the UC Board of Regents last week.

University officials said the creation of the vice chancellorship emphasizes the importance of research to UCI.
