While Shanghai Burns, the Night Shift Sleeps

PEKING — An official Shanghai newspaper denounced night-shift workers who slept while firemen fought a massive blaze that caused $1.4 million in damage to their office building.
Shanghai’s Liberation Daily, available in Peking on Thursday, said it is common for Chinese night workers to sleep, play cards or drink through their shifts.
“There is an unwritten rule: the nightshift can go to sleep. . . . Being on duty at night has become ‘a cushy job’ and ‘a pleasure,’ ” a commentary complained.
