The second major storm in the Northeast this week dumped up to 16 inches of new snow and heavy rain today, closing schools in New York and northern New England and flooding streets.
Much of the Northeast, still recovering from a storm Wednesday that left as much as 20 inches of snow in New Hampshire and knocked out power to nearly 300,000 residents, was hit with more snow, rain and sleet and winds of up to 44 m.p.h.
Up to 16 inches of snow fell overnight in the Northern Kingdom in northern Vermont, while 10 inches was recorded in Montpelier, Vt., six inches in Burlington, Vt., and four inches at Augusta, Me., and Lebanon, N.H.
6 Inches at Saranac Lake
The snow forced schools to shut down in Vermont, southern New Hampshire and the Adirondack Mountains of New York, where about six inches was on the ground at Saranac Lake.
Rain and rapid snowmelt caused some flooding of streets and low-lying areas across southern New England. The storm dumped heavy rainfall from the central New England coast to New York and New Jersey.
Portsmouth, N.H., received 2.45 inches of rain; Providence, R.I., got 1.59 inches and Boston 1.44 inches.
In eastern Massachusetts, some roads were blocked by the flooding. Part of Massachusetts 128 in Peabody was closed sporadically through the commuter rush as crews used backhoes to scoop up a mud slide at a construction site.
