The U.N. General Assembly voted 79 to 28 to condemn the United States for its bombing raid on Libya last April. The non-binding resolution, sponsored primarily by Arab and Soviet Bloc states, was opposed by most of Washington’s Western allies, Japan, Israel and a few Third World nations. There were 33 abstainers, including Greece and Turkey, both members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The resolution said the raid violated international law and called on the United States to refrain from threatening or attacking Libya again. It said Libya is entitled to compensation.
