Transit Fares Increase
Faced with shrinking federal and state transportation funds, the City Council last week approved fare increases for the Norwalk Transit System. The increase is the first in five years.
The base fare for fixed-route buses will increase from 35 cents to 50 cents. The fare for children under 17 will be raised from 25 cents to 35 cents. Elderly and handicapped patrons will see their fares go from 15 cents to 25 cents.
Fares for the dial-a-ride van--which is restricted to disabled people--will increase to 50 cents for all passengers.
Three people spoke against the increase, saying there are residents on fixed incomes who cannot afford it.
City officials said they would look into starting a program in which those who cannot afford the fare increases could get a free pass or pay a reduced fare.
