Waves of Soviet and Afghan air force jets bombed and rocketed guerrilla positions in eastern Afghanistan as ground forces pounded the insurgents’ fortifications with artillery and tank fire. Guerrilla sources said thousands of troops are involved in a major offensive in Nangarhar province, close to the Pakistani border. The moujahedeen rebels have been reported under heavy attack since late last week, when the Soviet and Afghan forces began an effort to close rebel supply routes.
