Carlsbad
A San Diego Gas & Electric Co. worker received second and third-degree burns on his upper body Monday when he was sprayed by flaming gasoline from a portable generator while working at the company’s Encina Power Plant in Carlsbad.
Joseph T. Qualin, 37, of Santee, was listed in stable condition at the UC San Diego Medical Center burn ward with second-degree burns to his arms and chest and third-degree burns to his hands and fingers, SDG&E; spokeswoman Karen Duncan said.
Qualin and two other SDG&E; employees, who were not injured, were repairing a transformer at the power plant when the accident occurred, Duncan said. Qualin was priming a gasoline-powered portable generator when the carburetor apparently backfired, spraying gasoline on him, she said.
SDG&E; investigators are studying the accident, she said.
