Southeast Roundup : Alabama Romps to Win, 38-3
Sophomore halfback Bobby Humphrey ran for a school-record 284 yards and 3 touchdowns at Starkville, Miss., Saturday as No. 8 Alabama routed No. 19 Mississippi State, 38-3.
The Tide, rebounding from a 23-3 loss a week earlier to Penn State, is 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the Southeastern Conference. Mississippi State is 6-3 and 2-2.
Humphrey scored on runs of 4, 20 and 9 yards in shattering the one-game rushing record of 233 yards set by Bobby Marlow against Auburn in 1951. Humphrey carried the ball 30 times, and Alabama piled up 514 yards in 74 carries.
The 6-1, 187-pound Humphrey left early in the fourth quarter after his 50-yard run to the Mississippi State 3 set up the Tide’s fifth touchdown.
“He’s one of the best running backs I’ve ever been around,” Alabama Coach Ray Perkins said of Humphrey. “He’s just got terrific extincts.”
The Tide led, 21-0, before it threw its first pass, and Mike Shula wound up completing only 1 of 6 passes for 17 yards.
Alabama’s Van Tiffin kicked five extra points, breaking the NCAA record of 125 straight set by Oklahoma’s Uwe von Schamann in 1976-78. Tiffin has 129 straight.
Mississippi 21, LSU 19--At Baton Rouge, La., Mark Young, J.R. Ambrose and Tony Dentley ran for touchdowns, and the Rebels made two goal-line stands to score a stunning victory over the No. 11 Tigers.
Young completed 18 of 31 passes for 171 yards and led a balanced Mississippi attack. The Rebels forced eight LSU punts and improved to 5-2-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC. The Tigers are 5-2 and 3-1.
LSU’s David Browndyke kicked four field goals of 40, 31, 52 and 21 yards but missed twice in the final minutes from 52 and 30 yards.
The Tigers’ touchdown came on a 29-yard pass from Tommy Hodson to Wendell Davis. Davis, the nation’s leading receiver, caught 14 passes for 208 yards and set a school record for receptions in one year with 59. Hodson completed 21 of 39 attempts for 251 yards.
Memphis St. 22, Vanderbilt 21--At Nashville, running back Jeff Womack scored from three yards out with 3:20 remaining, and quarterback Tim Jones scrambled into the end zone for a two-point conversion to give the Tigers their first win of the season.
The Tigers and Commodores are both 1-7.
Georgia 28, Richmond 13--Lars Tate rushed for 131 yards in 18 carries and tied a Bulldog record with four touchdowns at Athens, Ga.
Tate, a junior running back, scored on runs of 3, 3, and 7 yards and caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from James Jackson.
A four-touchdown game was last accomplished at Georgia by Herschel Walker in 1981, and Tate also became the first Bulldog running back to gain 100 yards in three consecutive games since Walker in 1982.
The Bulldogs of the Southeastern Conference boosted their record to 6-2, while the Spiders, members of the Division I-AA Yankee Conference, fell to 4-4.
Virginia Tech 17, Kentucky 15--Chris Kinzer kicked his 16th straight field goal, a 49-yarder with one second left at Blacksburg, Va., to hand the Wildcats (3-4-1) their fourth straight loss. Tech (6-2-1) began the winning drive on its five-yard line with 4:18 left.
