Leonard-Hagler Fight Gains Approval
RENO — The Nevada Athletic Commission gave Sugar Ray Leonard unanimous approval Thursday to fight Marvelous Marvin Hagler on April 6.
Commission Vice Chairman Duane Ford said a site for Leonard’s return to the ring was expected to be announced in New York at a press conference Monday. The fight reportedly will be held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Leonard was examined by 10 medical specialists over the weekend in Las Vegas. While the doctors were chosen at the request of the fight promoter, Ford said some Nevada ring physicians were involved and there was “no question at all†about Leonard’s suitability to fight.
Ford added that the data were turned over to the state’s medical advisory board for further evaluation. “If they find anything we’ve missed, it will affect the promotion,†he said.
Leonard suffered a detached retina in 1982, and has fought only once since, retiring after winning on a decision over Kevin Howard in May, 1984.
