The United States has told the U.N. secretary general that it will contribute $100 million to the United Nations’ regular budget, less than half its 1986 assessment, a U.S. official said. U.S. Ambassador Vernon A. Walters informed Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar by phone of the reduced contribution and said a formal letter and the money would follow, the official said. Perez de Cuellar has said that the world body needs at least $120 million from Washington to pay fixed costs.
