A murderer was the object of an intensive manhunt around East Chicago, Ind., after he escaped while being transferred from a hospital back to prison. Police Sgt. Gilbert Diaz described the convict, David J. Roberts, 42, as armed and “very, very dangerous.†Roberts, who was serving six life sentences for kidnaping and killing a couple and their infant daughter, pulled a hidden gun on his two guards, handcuffed them, took their weapons and drove off in their car during the trip back to Indiana State Prison, at Michigan City, on Friday night. The guards later got away and fled on foot.
