Tennis Roundup : Lendl, Becker Open Play With Straight-Set Victories in Tokyo

Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia and Boris Becker of West Germany won opening-round matches Wednesday in the $375,000 Super Seiko tennis tournament at Tokyo.

Becker, the 18-year-old West German ranked second in the world, had more difficulty than Lendl as he had to come back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set to subdue Matt Anger, 6-3, 6-4.

Lendl, the defending champion and the world’s top-ranked player, crushed Japan’s Shuzo Matsuoka, ranked 400th in the world, 6-1, 6-1.

Last Sunday, Becker defeated Lendl in the final of the Australian Indoor tournament at Sydney.

Stefan Edberg of Sweden, seeded third, beat Jimmy Arias, 6-2, 6-2.

Today, Lendl will face Australia’s Paul McNamee, who struggled to eliminate Vallis Wilder, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, while Becker’s next opponent will be Jaime Yzaga of Peru, the world’s No. 65-ranked player who celebrates his 19th birthday today.

At Brighton, England, Bulgarian sisters Katerina and Manuela Maleeva were both ousted in the second round of a $200,000 women’s tournament.

Jo Durie of Britain defeated Katerina Maleeva, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, and Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa disposed of Manuela Maleeva, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

In another match, Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia, a finalist at the U.S. Open this year, had no trouble reaching the last eight with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tine Scheuer-Larsen of Denmark.
