Solidarity founder Lech Walesa said he will not fly to Los Angeles to pick up a human rights award Thursday because Polish authorities will not guarantee him the right to return home. “I must stay in the country in the name of the responsibility,� Walesa said. The John-Roger Foundation in Santa Monica earlier this month named Walesa as one of three recipients of its annual Integrity Award. Walesa, in a telephone interview from his apartment in Gdansk, said that “nobody from the serious people (in the government) gave an answer on whether I could return home.� Walesa’s wife, Danuta, had said last Friday that her husband would not seek permission to travel to America because the “situation (in Poland) is not right.�
