Solidarity founder Lech Walesa said he will not fly to Los Angeles to pick up a human rights award Thursday because Polish authorities will not guarantee him the right to return home. “I must stay in the country in the name of the responsibility,†Walesa said. The John-Roger Foundation in Santa Monica earlier this month named Walesa as one of three recipients of its annual Integrity Award. Walesa, in a telephone interview from his apartment in Gdansk, said that “nobody from the serious people (in the government) gave an answer on whether I could return home.†Walesa’s wife, Danuta, had said last Friday that her husband would not seek permission to travel to America because the “situation (in Poland) is not right.â€
