Marmont Memories

Chris Hodenfield’s intriguing “Tales of the Chateau” (Sept. 14) left out a vital perk for guests at the fortress-like haven: a snug, subterranean garage.

Anyone in residence circa 1940 couldn’t help but be reminded of the in-house parking privileges. Conductor (and Gershwin mentor) Paul Whiteman would arrive at all hours of the day and night in his custom-built Packard and herald his return by sounding an auto horn. It tooted the first four notes of his orchestra’s theme, “Rhapsody in Blue.”
