A California Highway Patrol officer who stopped to help what he thought was a stranded motorist ended up shooting a man who was trying to burglarize the stranded vehicle, officers said. The incident occurred on the Temple Street off-ramp of the Orange Freeway in Pomona when CHP Officer R. W. Perkins investigated two cars stopped on the shoulder of the road. As he approached, two men got out of the vehicles. One, identified later as Ricky E. Sanchez, 22, allegedly pointed a sawed-off shotgun at the officer, who in turn drew his revolver and shot the man, wounding him in the leg and foot. The other suspect fled. One of the cars had been stolen the night before, and officers believe that the men were trying to burglarize the other car. Sanchez was treated for wounds at a local hospital and booked for assault on a police officer, auto burglary, driving a stolen vehicle and possession of a dangerous weapon.
