If Only It Could Have Come Down to Witt’s Decision, Not Mauch’s
- Share via
While watching Gene Mauch display his managerial skills last Sunday, I now know why he has never won a pennant in his 25 years of managing. Mike Witt had given Mauch 8 innings of masterful pitching with just two mistakes (the home runs by Gedman and Baylor). But Mauch makes a pitching change, and the Angels lose a game they probably should have won. (Actually, Mauch sent Marcel Lachemann out to make the move; he didn’t have the guts to do it himself.)
I’ve always believed in the adage, “You dance with the one that brung ya.” Well, Witt deserved a decision in this game. Win or lose, it was his game.
