The FCC chairman urged local phone deregulation.

A three-year experiment by willing states in the deregulation of local telephone companies would bring customers more service for less money, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Mark Fowler predicted. Citing airline and long-distance telephone deregulation as examples, Fowler said consumers would benefit if phone companies were allowed to set their own rates and services and if the local telephone market were opened to competition.
