The Senate approved a compromise bill to establish the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area in Oregon and Washington. The measure authorizes $40 million for land acquisition and provides for payments to counties for land acquired by the U.S. Forest Service. A similar measure was passed in the House and the bill is expected to go to a conference committee.
