The Soviet Union has provided fresh information about a mysterious outbreak of anthrax in 1979, which the United States had linked to the development of Soviet biological weapons. At a recent international conference in Geneva, the Soviets said that the outbreak was caused by government distribution of contaminated cattle feed, which infected privately owned cattle and ultimately led to the deaths of about 200 people. Previously, the Soviets said that the outbreak was caused by ingestion of tainted meat but said nothing about the origins of the contamination.
