East German Police Free American Seized on Wall

WEST BERLIN — A 68-year-old U.S. citizen seized by Communist border guards after he ran along the top of the Berlin Wall in East Berlin territory has been returned to the West after two days’ detention, West Berlin police said Tuesday.
The man, John Runnings, ran several hundred yards along the 12-foot high white concrete wall on Saturday with a companion. Both were pulled down by gaurds and driven away into East Berlin.
Police, who did not give the hometowns of either man, said Runnings’ companion remained in custody.
