The San Diego County Employees Assn. has filed suit against the county and the Board of Supervisors seeking an injunction halting proposed layoffs from the public defender’s office.
The suit, filed Friday in San Diego Superior Court by attorney Robert Neal, was authorized by Wyleen Luoma, general manager of the CEA. The suit claims that all administrative remedies have been exhausted and only a judicial ruling could solve the problem.
The suit seeks a writ asking that the county Board of Supervisors set aside its May 21 decision to engage a private contractor to provide defense to indigents.
The layoffs would also include clerical employees from the Office of Defender Services and the suit charges that the county and the supervisors have a duty to meet with them to discuss the situation.
