An Israeli judge ordered retired Ohio auto worker John Demjanjuk held in jail until the end of his war crimes trial, which is expected to begin in December. The Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk, 66, was extradited from the United States, where he had lived since 1952, to face charges that he was the sadistic Nazi guard known as “Ivan the Terrible” at the Treblinka death camp in Poland. His American attorney, Mark O’Connor, contends that Demjanjuk is a victim of mistaken identity.
