The Soviet Union, United States, Brazil and France all won their fourth consecutive match to open the semifinal round of the world volleyball tournament in Paris.
The Soviets, looking for their third straight world title, defeated Japan, 16-14, 15-5, 15-6. The United States, 1984 Olympic champion and the only team to defeat the Soviets consistently in recent years, edged Poland, 15-12, 15-13, 15-11.
