A man arrested Saturday in the shooting death of a 10-year-old Logan Heights girl may have been target shooting in his backyard when he accidentally killed the girl, a police spokesman said.

Sonia Cano was shot in the chest Saturday morning while walking in the alley between 24th and 25th streets south of K Street, and died of the wound two hours later at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Jose Maria Ruiz-Maldonado, 45, is being held without bail at County Jail on suspicion of murder.

Homicide Detective Hank Olais said Monday that it appears that Ruiz was target shooting with a newly purchased handgun in the backyard of his home in the 2400 block of K Street. Police believe an errant shot may have gone through a fence and struck the girl as she walked through the alley. The district attorney’s office is expected to announce next week whether Ruiz will be charged in the girl’s death, police spokesman Bill Robinson said.
