Community College Roundup : Orange Coast Teams Sweep in Cross-Country

Orange Coast College swept the top five spots in men’s and women’s meets Friday to defeat Rancho Santiago in Orange Empire Conference cross-country meets at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Jose Alcaraz covered the four-mile course in 19 minutes 51 seconds as the men won, 15-40. Dave Parsel was second in 20:03, Kenji Kallin and Phil Sanchez shared third in 20:07 and Sal Alcaraz was fourth in 20:16.

Harolene Walter ran 18 minutes flat to lead the women to a 15-50 win on the three-mile course. Lois Curl was second in 18:04, Delinda Patino third in 18:25 and Julie Yoast and Tracy Wright fourth in 18:58.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Cypress College 2, Fullerton 1--The Chargers got a goal from Darrin Lane in the first half and one from Dave Bolton in the second for their first win of the season. They are 0-4-1.

In Occidental Tournament women’s soccer:

Golden West 5, Occidental 0--Freshman Connie Knapp scored three goals as the Rustlers advanced to a second-round match against Redlands at 1 p.m today. Hayle Wihongo and Kelli Winkler added second-half goals for Golden West (3-1).

In nonconference volleyball:

Orange Coast 3, Grossmont 1--Ann Javage had 16 kills and Cindy Thomas 12 as the Pirates improved to 2-2. Kristi Moothart had seven service aces for Orange Coast.

In South Coast Conference water polo:

Golden West 14, Cerritos 7--Freshman Scott Larsen scored five goals and sophomore Gary Tichy three for the Rustlers in the conference opener for both teams. The Rustlers are 6-2 overall.

College of Sequoias Tournament--Orange Coast College’s water polo team won twice in the opening round of pool play at Visalia.

OCC (9-1) beat Ventura in the first game, 16-4, and Modesto in the second, 12-9. Orange Coast plays Allan Hancock this morning in the final round of pool play, with the winner advancing to the afternoon championship round. OCC’s Eric Keller scored seven goals against Modesto.
