‘Voice’ to Go Silent in Europe

MUNICH, West Germany — The Voice of America’s 11-month-old European radio service will close at the end of this year because of budget cuts in Washington, a spokesman at VOA-Europe said today.
The English-language service went on the air on Oct. 15 last year and was broadcast 24 hours a day in Rome, Paris, Geneva, Brussels, Amsterdam and several West German cities. The aim of the broadcasts was to portray everyday American life in a way that would correct what U.S. Information Agency Director Charles Z. Wick said were “misconceptions about the United States among West European youth.”
