“One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Listen for Pleasure. Michael Moriarty is brilliant in his portrayal of society’s assorted discards in this rich, poignant reading of Ken Kesey’s best seller about life in a mental hospital ruled by the formidable Nurse Ratched. As a film this story was even more successful, winning five Oscars, including one for Jack Nicholson as the brawling R. T. McMurphy, who tries to change the rules. Moriarty’s impeccably variegated rendering of its characters provides almost palpable contact with the strange and sinister world inhabited by mental patients and those who would “cure” them by destroying their selfhood.
