3,700 Drug Addicts in Moscow, Official Says

MOSCOW — The chief of the Moscow city Communist Party has said there are 3,700 registered drug addicts in the Soviet capital, the official newspaper Moskovskaya Pravda reported Sunday.
“Drug abuse is becoming a serious problem,†the newspaper quoted Boris N. Yeltsin as saying in a speech last week. “We closed our eyes to it for a long time, and we were ashamed to speak about it. This policy of burying our heads in the sand has meant that now, in Moscow, there are 3,700 registered drug addicts.â€
