Man Leaving Church Slain by Ulster Gunmen

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Unidentified gunmen shot a man to death as he left a Roman Catholic Church late Tuesday, police said Wednesday.
A police spokesman said the man and a woman were approached by a group of gunmen as they left the Holy Cross Church in the Ardoyne district of northern Belfast on Tuesday night near the “peace line” between the city’s hard-line Catholic and Protestant communities.
Police declined to release the man’s name pending notification of his family. But they said he was well known as a volunteer worker at the social club alongside the church.
No one claimed responsibility for the killing, but officials said Protestant extremists are suspected.
