Quincy Watts of Taft High has been named the sophomore state athlete of the year by Cal-Hi Sports magazine.

Watts, 16, won the state title in the 200-meter dash in the June state meet at Cerritos College and finished second in the 100. He also anchored the 400-meter relay team to a second-place finish.

Led by Watts, Taft won its first state and City track championships.

The victory by Taft in the state meet was a first for a Valley boys team. The City championship was only the second by a Valley team and the first in 10 years.

At the City championships at Birmingham High in Van Nuys, Watts won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and anchored the victorious 400-meter relay. He also ran the anchor leg of the 1,600-meter relay team, which finished fifth.

Watts has personal bests of 10.56 in the 100 and 20.97 in the 200. The 200-meter clocking stood as the national sophomore record for a few weeks last spring until William Reed of Philadelphia’s Central High lowered it to 20.5.

The Mori Fencing Academy of Beverly Hills swept the first three spots of the men’s competition in the Southern California Division Foil Open held this weekend at Los Angeles Valley College.

Brad Miller of Sylmar, driving a Corky Banuelos Firebird, won the 40-lap modified main event for the first time Saturday night at Saugus Speedway. Jimmy Insolo of Canyon Country was second.
