DON’T BELIEVE IT
“TRUE BELIEVERS.” True Believers. EMI-America. When these guys storm into town from their home base of Austin, they turn clubs like the Lingerie into seething pits of rock ‘n’ roll testimony. But when they went into the studio to make their first major-label LP, they turned timid. You can’t smell the sweat or feel the heat on this collection of well-mannered Stones turns and Bruce byproducts. The Rank and File connection yields some country-rock hybrids and 20 ways to imitate a train with guitar and drums, and while there’s some slinky charm and clear-eyed charisma here and there, overall this is too generic to be believed.
