Evelyn Ashford won the women’s 200 meters, and East Germany’s Marita Koch took the women’s 400 meters Friday before about 40,000 fans at the Ivo Van Damme Memorial track and field meet.

Ashford was timed in 22.06 seconds as she scored a narrow victory in the 200 over East Germany’s Heike Drechsler (22.10).

East Germany gained a measure of revenge when Koch, the world record-holder, defeated Olympic champion Valerie Brisco-Hooks in the 400. Koch caught Brisco-Hooks after 100 meters and won easily in 49.28 seconds. Brisco-Hooks was timed in 50.29.

Mark Nenow set an American record of 27 minutes 20.56 seconds to win the 10,000 meters. His time was the fastest of the year and beat the previous national mark of 27:25.61 set by Alberto Salazar at Oslo in June 1982.
