The Nation : Dissident Granted Tenure
Father James Provost, a prominent canon law scholar who has taken controversial stands on what church leaders feel are too liberal views on sexual issues and other topics, was granted tenure at the Vatican-chartered Catholic University of America in Washington. University documents indicate that the virtual lifetime contract was offered Provost only after he agreed to publicly endorse a statement saying Catholic practices are controlled not by church lawyers but by the Pope and his bishops. Provost also agreed to publish “clarifying articles” concerning his views on the availability of church sacraments to divorced and remarried Catholics and the role of the laity in running local churches.
