AF Destroys Missile During Test
Associated Press
VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE — An unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile was blown up during a test flight over the Pacific today because of an undisclosed problem, the Air Force said.
“The destruct signal was sent well into the missile’s 30-minute test flight,†said Tech. Sgt. Fred Bolinger of the 1st Strategic Aerospace Division’s public affairs staff at Vandenberg. He said an anomaly developed during the flight of the 78,000-pound Minuteman 3 missile, which can carry explosives to three separate targets, and it was destroyed.
